W.W.B.U.A.

About

The Western Washington Baseball Umpires Association was formed in 1995 to serve the baseball community in Western Washington.

Our service area extends from Tacoma up through Southern King County, south to Northern Thurston County, to Enumclaw/White River in the east, and west to the Gig Harbor/Peninsula area.

We provide qualified umpires to 34 high schools, 36 junior high & middle schools, 2 universities, and 2 community colleges. We also provide qualified umpires to most of the recreation teams in the outlined geographical area, including the following programs; Pacific International League, American Legion, Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Colt, Mickey Mantle, Pony, and Sandy Koufax.

We have 3 levels of umpiring in our association.

The "Apprentice" program is for the new people who have never umpired before or have some umpiring experience, but not in a structured organization. This program is a minimum 2 year program during which you receive training and work games. If at the end of the 2 year period you have passed all the practical work requirements, you move on to the next level.

The "Supplemental" program is for the experienced umpire who transfers to the W.W.B.U.A. from another recognized association and those umpires who have passed through the "Apprentice" program. The "Supplemental" program is a minimum one year program to evaluate the transferred umpire and to give more advanced training and games to those who have passed through the "Apprentice" program.

Our third and final stage is the "Regular" umpire. Being a "Regular" offers you the opportunity to apply your training & skills to work up to the highest level of games that we umpire.

The W.W.B.U.A. is a very fair organization that allows you to umpire at the highest levels of your abilities. We offer you an excellent ongoing training and evaluation program. We want you to be successful and it is our job to help you get to the highest level you can work.

There is no cost to join the W.W.B.U.A. However, it does cost $30 per year to belong the W.O.A. (Washington Officials Association) to be eligible to work school ball. All W.W.B.U.A. members pay 10% of their total earnings as dues to the W.W.B.U.A. to fund the association and its programs.

All W.W.B.U.A. members are considered as independent contractors and are issued 1099’s for tax purposes. All W.W.B.U.A. members in good standing are covered under Washington State L&I in case of injury while working a game.

Being a baseball umpire takes a big commitment of your time during our season starting in March and ending in early August each year. For those very dedicated umpires, we also have several "fall ball" programs we service. It takes a special kind of person to become a baseball umpire and to succeed in the sport.

The W.W.B.U.A. offers the best recruiting & training programs in the area. If you are ready to make that commitment, give us a call or send an e-mail.
